F2.5A Yamaha 2.5Hp Four Stroke Lightweight Outboard Engine

The smallest of the Yamaha portable four stroke engines, weighing in at only 17Kg. The 2.5Hp includes a forward and neutral gearbox and an integral fuel tank. Throttle is on the twist grip tiller. Reverse is obtained by rotating the engine round to face backwards. The handle can then flip over to make steering in reverse easy.
Come alongside gently:
In comparing this engine to others, remember that this has a fully functional neutral/forward gear system, it does not rely on a centrifugal clutch. Why is it better?.. a centrifugal clutch means that at tickover the propeller is not spinning at all. No propeller spinning = no steering. An engine is usually at tickover at the end of the trip as the dock or boat is approached. Need we say more?

Yamaha F4. 4Hp Four Stroke Portable Outboard Engine

Yamaha F4. The smallest engine in the range with a full forward/neutral/reverse gearbox. Integral fuel tank with the option to connect an external tank as well if needed. If the engine is carried empty of fuel, it makes it slightly lighter to carry.

Our Opinion

The 4Hp replaces the old single cylinder two stroke. Some describe it as quieter, we prefer to say it makes a different noise. The old 2-stroke buzzed away, this has a much lower note to it. The carry handle on the front is big enough to make it easy to carry without digging into your hand. The same size handle on the back makes it easy to tilt. It comes as standard with the safety of a kill-cord switch, which means a couple of extra kill-cords are a wise investment, as they have a habit of walking by themselves.

RRP is £619 for the short shaft and £629 for the long shaft version.

Yamaha F6. 6Hp Four Stroke Portable Outboard Engine

Yamaha F6. Little brother to the 8Hp. The first engine in the range to feature two cylinders. It has a full forward/neutral/reverse gearbox. Integral fuel tank with the option to connect an external tank as well if needed. The smallest engine to feature a 12v output for lighting or battery charging. It will provide 6amps at 12v. It includes the facilty for attaching a hosepipe to enable the engine to be flushed through without having to go to the trouble of attaching fluch muffs and running the engine. It is also capable of taking remote controls for the times when it may be used either with a small forward control RIB or as a yacht auxiliary.

Although the standard propeller is suitable for most uses this engine will be put to, there are 6 propellers in the range that can be used, from the 5" pitch dual thrust prop to a coarse 8.5" pitch.

Our Opinion

The 6Hp has some very useful features taken from the bigger engines, such as the flush facility. The twin cylinder makes it smooth, especially in the smaller 6Hp guise. It is however the same size and weight as the 8Hp, which in our opinion is better value for money. However, owing to the low mechanical stress and therefore legendary reliability and long life of these engines, the Envronment Agency use them frequently.

F8C Yamaha 8Hp Four Stroke Outboard Engine

The F8C is the more powerful 8Hp version of the F6 engine. It's the same weight and same engine size. The fuel tank is seperate, is included and holds 12 litres of fuel. The ignition system is the latest CDI/Computer controlled system. An alternator gives a lighting output of 6 amps at 12v.
It has a full forward/neutral/reverse gearbox. It includes the facilty for attaching a hosepipe to enable the engine to be flushed through without having to go to the trouble of attaching fluch muffs and running the engine. It is also capable of taking remote controls for the times when it may be used either with a small forward control RIB or as a yacht auxiliary.

Our Opinion

Better value for money than the 6hp if your dinghy is rated to 8Hp. We find the 8Hp easily pushes a 3 metre inflatable along at planing speeds with two people on board, whereas the 6Hp struggles.
